Juvederm Erases Wrinkles Naturally

Juvederm does more than quickly smooth away lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. It also offers a natural way to turn back time, gently reversing some of the most significant affects of age.

The new dermal filler is able to accomplish this because it is composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps to add volume and hydration. Although other fillers also contain hyaluronic acid, Juvederm incorporates a novel cross-linking technology that provides a smoother look and feel.

Cross-linking also helps Juvederm last longer. While hyaluronic acid normally occurs in liquid form, which the body metabolizes and eliminates in less than a day, cross-linked Juvederm is a gel that lasts one year or more. This means that after Juvederm is injected, its wrinkle-reducing effects last 12 months or longer. In June 2007, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved changes to the product’s labeling indicating that the effects of Juvederm may last for one year.

In addition to its superior results, Juvederm is also the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is proven to be safe and effective for persons with darker skin tones.

Dr. Steinberg is celebrating the Fall & Winter season with a "Full Face Rejuvenation" special!   Purchase one syringe of Juvederm and receive a second at 50% off!   (Both syringes must be used on the day of treatment). Expires December 31, 2008.

Essential Summer Beauty Fix: Laser Hair Removal

Since its introduction in 1995, laser hair removal has come a long way. It’s now one of the most popular medical cosmetic procedures, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASPS), with more than one and a half million treatments performed last year.

It's not hard to understand why the laser method has been so well-received. The procedure is fast, easy, and quickly clears large body areas that would otherwise require repeated shaving, painful waxing or messy usage of chemical depilatories. That makes it easy to quickly get ready for the beach or a special night under the stars.

During laser treatment, light energy is delivered to the targeted area and absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles. This absorbed energy creates a short burst of heat, which damages the germative cells that make the hair grow. With repeated damage, these cells lose their ability to form hair and are eventually removed from the body. Because hair tends to re-grow finer and thinner in treated areas, if it grows back at all, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) allows the process to be described as permanent hair reduction.

The procedure lasts anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the area being treated. A series of several treatments is usually required, since the laser only treats hairs that are actively growing but does not address those that are dormant or resting.

Because it’s so fast and effective, many men now prefer laser to other hair removal methods like waxing and plucking. According to a recent survey from Cargo Magazine of 500 men in North America, 54% remove hair on their back, 45% trim chest hair and more than 70% remove hair around their eyebrows, ears or neck. Of those, one in five said they prefer laser hair removal.

The Easy Way to Lovely Lashes

Thinning eyelashes are a common problem and can occur as a result of various allergies, usage of certain eye makeup, as a side effect of different medications or conditions, in response to exposure to toxins, after eye surgery, and from nutritional deficiencies. The most common culprit is often age, as hair on many parts of the body starts to lose its fullness and luster.

Mascara and false eyelashes can provide the illusion of volume, but both of these solutions are temporary. They can also easily wash off during the rain or after a swim.

Now there’s a way to improve the quality of the eyelashes themselves. Developed by a physician, RevitaLash is an eyelash conditioner that has been shown to promote the appearance of longer, fuller, thicker eyelashes after just three weeks of daily use.

The product is hypoallergenic, and safe for persons with sensitive eyes as well as contact lens wearers. A 60-day supply is priced at $150.

To learn more about RevitaLash, or to place your order, please call our office at 954-720-6333or visit our online store at  Advanced Cosmetic Laser Center | Product Center

Lipo-dissolve: the Easy Alternative to Liposuction

Until recently, it was difficult to sculpt the body without surgery. Existing technologies like liposuction can effectively remove unwanted fat deposits, but require long healing times and carried surgical risks. LipoDissolve, however, offers many of the benefits of liposuction without these disadvantages.

First developed in Europe in the 1980s, the LipoDissolve technique has been improved and standardized over time. It now involves a series of microinjections in which a pharmaceutical agent, phosphatidylcholine-deoxycholate is delivered directly to deposits of unwanted fat. These medications cause the fat to gradually loosen and liquefy, so that they may be eliminated through the body’s natural processes. After three or four treatment sessions, most patients achieve the results they desire.

Although fat may return in treated areas, especially in the event of overall weight gain, many physicians report that treated areas largely remain fat-free. Numerous retrospective clinical studies have demonstrated that phosphatidylcholine can safely and effectively remove fat deposits without significant medical risk.

While the hips, abdomen and thighs respond particularly well to treatment, even smaller body areas like the love handles can be sculpted. LipoDissolve can also help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

LipoDissolve is not a weight loss regimen. It should be used in combination with a proper diet and exercise regimen.

Stay Wrinkle-Free – and Save!

As an incentive for Botox and Restylane users to keep up to date with their treatments - and maintain their smooth, wrinkle-free results - the manufacturers of those products offer special savings in the form of rewards programs.

For Botox, patients receive $25 off all subsequent treatments if they occurs within 3 to 6 months of their last injection.

Injection with Botox takes about 15 minutes. Shortly thereafter, Botox begins blocking nerve transmission to specific muscles, putting those muscles to rest for the next few months.

That causes wrinkles in the affected muscles to virtually disappear. The full effects of Botox appear within 2 to 10 days after injection and results last from 3 to 4 months. As with Juvederm and Restylane, one of the greatest benefits of Botox is no downtime. Patients can go back to their normal routine immediately.

The Restylane Rewards program offers up to $475 in savings through the first five treatments. After the fifth treatment, you become a Premium Restylane Rewards member and after using 4.0 mL of Restylane, receive a $200 treatment voucher along with a $25 Rewards Benefit check after every treatment with at least 1.0 mL or two 0.4 mL syringes.

FDA-approved Restylane is an injectable gel containing hyaluronic acid, a natural, plant-derived substance that binds to water molecules in the skin and provides support for surface tissues. This reduces the appearance of wrinkles, particularly around the nose and mouth and is also used to plump the lips. Although other substances including bovine collagen, human collagen and various synthetic materials are also used to plump wrinkles, Restylane is the most popular as it provides excellent results with minimal disruption to the skin.

Don’t Go Back to School With Acne!

More than 17 million people in the U.S. suffer from acne. For about a third, acne is severe and leads to embarrassing outbreaks, rashes and scars. Although many over-the counter products are available to help control acne, few have been clinically shown to reduce acne and prevent it from returning.

Dr. Janee Steinberg offers three of the most effective ways to eradicate acne and its side effects: Obagi CLENZIderm MD, our special acne facial and Fraxel laser treatment.

Obagi CLENZIderm MD is the only prescription-strength acne system with 5% liquefied benzoyl peroxide. Most benzoyl peroxides are formulated with insoluble macro-crystals that, when applied, mainly remain on the surface of the skin because they are too big to penetrate the follicle. But CLENZIderm MD utilizes patent pending SoluZyl Technology in which benzoyl peroxide converts into liquid form on contact with the skin. This allows the product to deliver more benzoyl peroxide into the follicle to more thoroughly reduce acne-causing bacteria, thereby reducing acne flares.

Radiesse Offers Longer Lasting Results

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved Radiesse, a next-generation cosmetic dermal filler, for the long-lasting correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles.

Unlike other fillers that last just a few months, Radiesse has been shown to last one year or more.

These results are possible because Radiesse is the first filler that contains calcium-based microspheres. This technology not only provides volume replacement to wrinkles and folds but also stimulates the body to produce new collagen. This unique action restores the fullness and contours of a youthful, healthy appearance.

Studies evaluating Radiesse were conducted at four different medical centers. In these studies, 117 women were treated; half of their face was treated with Radiesse and the other half was treated with collagen. Six months after treatment, 82% of patients experienced an improvement in wrinkles around the mouth and nose (nasolabial folds) with Radiesse. In 95% of the women, results from Radiesse were superior to those from collagen.

Radiesse can also be used to create cheekbones and enhance the contours of the face.

Melanoma Skyrockets Among the Young

The incidence of melanoma – the most deadly form of skin cancer – has spiked among young Caucasians, according to an article in a July 2008 issue of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

Since 1973, the incidence of invasive cutaneous melanoma among men and women aged 15 to 39 has significantly increased.

Among younger women, that rate has more than doubled.

The research was conducted by the National Institutes of Health and examined data on melanoma collected between 1973 and 2004 by the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program.

During this 30 year period, researchers found that the overall age-adjusted annual incidence of melanoma among young men increased from 4.7 to 7.7 cases per 100,000 persons. The age-adjusted annual incidence of melanoma among young almost tripled from 5.5 to 13.9 cases per 100,000 persons.

While melanoma accounts for roughly 4% of all skin cancers, it causes three quarters of skin cancer deaths. Last year, melanoma accounted for more than 8,100 deaths in the United States.

For those who spend time in the sun, regular usage of sunscreen is the single most effective way to prevent melanoma. This is because sunscreen helps filter the damaging ultraviolet rays from sunlight.

Getting the Red Out: New Help for Rosacea

Persistent redness of the skin affects more than one million Americans, mainly women between the ages of 30 and 50. Rosacea is believed to be hereditary, but can worsen with exposure to various triggers including extreme temperatures, sunlight, stress and certain medications and foods.

Rosacea is embarrassing – in a recent study by the National Rosacea Society, 74% of respondents said they cancel social events during flareups.

In years past, there was little help for those with skin redness. Antibiotics provide some limited benefit, but most rosacea sufferers relied upon covering their skin with layers of heavy makeup. New technology, however, now offers a way to permanently reduce redness.

Advanced Cosmetic Laser Center uses intense pulsed light (IPL) to target the tiny blood vessels near the surface of the skin. The system selectively heats these vessels, destroying malfunctioning capillaries so that blood flow will be directed to the deeper blood vessels, where it belongs. The body then reabsorbs these damaged cells, naturally eliminating them along with other waste materials. Treatment is safe, fast and gentle, typically taking less than 15 minutes. In just a few sessions, and sometimes in a single treatment, the appearance can be dramatically improved. To read more about IPL treatment for rosacea, please click here.

For less severe rosacea, we also offer chemical peels. A carefully selected mixture of chemical solutions gently applied to the skin produces a separation and peeling of the skin's outer layers. This stimulates the production of new skin from beneath, evening skin texture and tone.

How Stress Affects the Skin

Stress isn’t just an unpleasant emotion: it’s the cause of a complex set of physiological changes in the body that can result in everything from dull, lifeless skin to acne flares, premature wrinkling and an increased risk of heart disease.

The effects of stress on the skin begin with adrenaline. When confronted with a stressful situation, the body produces this “fight or flight” hormone. Adrenaline prepares the body for action in emergency situations, boosting the supply of oxygen and energy-giving glucose to the brain and muscles. At the same time, however, adrenaline re-directs blood flow away from the skin, thereby decreasing the skin’s supply of oxygen.

When this happens repeatedly, such as through the chronic stress induced by ongoing tension at home or at work, the skin doesn’t receive the nourishment it needs. This can result in dull skin tone, loss of elasticity and overactive sebaceous (oil) glands, leading to acne breakouts. Over prolonged periods, stressed skin often shows signs of early wrinkling and discoloration when internal regenerative processes break down. Stress also slows the skin’s rate of cellular turnover, so it takes longer for fresh, new skin cells to reach the skin’s surface.

Aside from eliminating the source of stress, easy ways to mitigate its effects include reducing caffeine intake, increasing consumption of antioxidants and supplementing skin care regimens.

Like stress, caffeine elevates adrenaline levels by altering the chemistry of the brain. It does this by inhibiting the action of adenosine.

Stress can also weaken the immune system and inhibit the important work of antioxidants, which slow the creation of damaging free radicals in the body. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules responsible for everything from killing harmful bacteria to increasing the risk of cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and skin problems. Eating foods rich in antioxidants, like brightly-colored fruits and vegetables, can help boost the body’s ability to prevent free radical damage, countering the effects of stress.

Perhaps the easiest way, though, to reduce the effects of stress on the skin is to boost the skin’s nutrient levels from the outside in. Topical products containing antioxidants enhance the skin’s ability to produce collagen and elastin. Two of the most important of the skin’s building blocks, collagen and elastin are necessary to help prevent the development of wrinkles. As levels of these substances decline with age and stress, skin develops wrinkles and other imperfections more quickly.

Advanced Cosmetic Laser Center offers several advanced cosmeceutical lines that can help boost collagen and elastin, countering the effects of stress on the skin.
